Most people know pawnshops are a great place to sell your items, but they can also be a great place to get a small loan using your hobby as collateral.
Fishing Gear for Pawn Shops
While most may jump to pawning motorcycles, cars, or electronics, professional hobby equipment like fishing gear may be worth more than you think. The key to getting a good deal for pawning or selling your fishing gear is location, location, location. If you live in the Great Lakes area or a city near popular fishing holes, fishing gear is in high demand. This equals better profits for the pawnshop and more cash for you. If you are landlocked, or in a more urban city, it may be more difficult to get cash for your fishing gear.
Make, Model, Condition
With most other items, the value of your fishing gear depends on the make, model, and condition of the item. Just like handguns or golf clubs, certain brands carry their value better than others do. A high value fishing pole would be a custom pole by a highly desirable builder, more of a boutique or exclusive rod than you can buy at Walmart or even Cabela's. Other factors may increase value to a fishing pole such as age or notoriety if you can prove that someone famous used the fishing pole, if it was used in an award-winning catch, or if it comes from an era that carries significant value, you may increase the worth of the item.
Fishing Accessories
In addition to the pole, if your fishing gear has any customizations or accessories, that may add value to the overall sale. For example, fishing reels can sometimes be worth more than the pole they are on. Some pawnshops may be willing to increase the price of the bundle if you have a few accessories that draw in buyers.
Pawning or Selling Fishing Equipment
Pawnshops work on two fronts: pawning or selling. When you sell an item to a pawnshop, it is just like selling your item to anyone else. You hand over the item, they give you the money, and the deal is done. The likelihood of you ever recovering your item is slim to none. However, a pawn works like a collateral loan, you bring in something (nearly anything) of value, and the pawnshop will loan you the money with the understanding that your item is returned when the loan is repaid.
Whenever you go into the pawnshop, take as much information as you can. Bring pictures of your latest catch, show the gear in motion, document what type of pole it is, or who made it. Anything that is expensive, noteworthy, or particularly valuable should be pointed out so the pawnshop owner can evaluate everything and offer you a fair price.
